Reading the charts
- All six races trend warmer over this window, but each panel has only 18 to 26 races, and single races swing 30 degrees or more. A few hot or cold years move these lines a lot, so treat the slopes as rough.
- Tokyo has the shortest record (its current format began in 2007), and much of its steep slope comes from warm races in 2025 and 2026.
- 2020 is left out everywhere because the mass races were cancelled or held as elite-only events. New York also has no 2012 race (Hurricane Sandy), and its 2026 race has not been run yet.
- Tokyo's "2021" point is the postponed 2021 edition, which was actually run in March 2022.
- The custom chart uses gridded reanalysis data (ERA5), which describes an area about 6 to 18 miles across rather than one street corner. It will not match a race's own weather reports exactly, especially near lakes, coasts and mountains.
